Can you eat and drink on the day?

Yes – you can eat and drink as normal before your DEXA scan. We recommend avoiding a very large meal right before your appointment, as this can sometimes cause slight variations in readings. Staying well-hydrated is important, so drink water as you normally would.

What is the radiation involved?

A DEXA scan uses a very low dose of X-ray radiation – about the same as a short domestic flight. It’s safe for most people, including those undergoing multiple scans per year. The exposure is significantly lower than a standard chest X-ray.

Does the time of day effect the results?

No – the time of day will not meaningfully change your scan results. Women’s results are also not impacted by their menstrual cycle. If you want to reduce small variations caused by hydration, food intake, or exercise, try to book your scans at a similar time of day each visit.

How do I make my scan as accurate as possible?

Wear light, comfortable clothing with minimal metal (zips, buttons, clips). Avoid heavy exercise, saunas, or large meals in the few hours before your scan. Arrive well-hydrated but not overly full. Try to keep your pre-scan routine consistent between scans so your results are easier to compare.

What clothing should I wear when having a DEXA scan?

Wear light, comfortable clothing such as activewear or a t-shirt and shorts/leggings. Avoid metal fastenings, jewellery, belts, or underwire bras as they can interfere with the scan.

Why is my scale weight different to my DEXA weight?

DEXA scans measure your total body composition – fat mass, lean mass, and bone mineral content – using precise calibration. The number may differ slightly from your bathroom scale due to:
- Different calibration and sensitivity levels
- Hydration status at the time of measurement
- Clothing weight during the scan
- Bathroom scales not measuring bone density or differentiating tissue types
